Ordering Prescriptions

To order a prescription please use one of the following ways:

  • Online through the NHS app
  • Returning the right-hand half of a prescription slip. Please place this in the green post box in reception.
  • Telephone 01538 704200 and press option two between 9.00 am and 1.00 pm Monday to Friday

Urgent Supply of Medication

If you urgently need your medicine, please call the dispensary at 01538 704200 between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm.

If we don’t have your medicine available, we will give you a prescription to take to a pharmacy.

Dispensing patients

We can only dispense medications to patients who live more than 1 mile (1.6 km) from a pharmacy.

Please let us know at least 72 hours ahead when you need your medication. This helps us order your medicine on time. If you can’t give us this notice, we might have to give you a prescription to take to the pharmacy.

Sometimes, medications might be out of stock. To help reduce any problems, please give us as much notice as you can.

According to NHS and NICE rules, we provide repeat prescriptions every 28 days. This helps us take care of you while keeping waste low.

For some medicines that you need to take regularly (like contraceptives and HRT), the time between prescriptions might be longer than 28 days. Your GP will decide if this is appropriate.

You can order your repeat prescriptions online using the NHS App. Please talk to our reception staff for help registering for this service.

Nominated Pharmacy

Most of our patients can get their prescriptions from our on-site dispensary. This service is available for all registered patients who live more than 1 mile from a pharmacy.

Some patients may want to get their medicine from a pharmacy near work or have it delivered to their home. We can send prescriptions digitally to any pharmacy you choose. If you want to change where you get your prescriptions, talk to someone in our dispensary team.

If you already get your medications from our dispensary, please keep doing that. We try to make this service easy and convenient for everyone.

Patients living within 1 mile of a pharmacy cannot get their medicines from our dispensary. These patients should choose a pharmacy that is easy to reach.

Help with NHS prescription costs

In England, about 90% of prescriptions are given for free. Some people don’t have to pay for their prescriptions if they fall into certain groups. This includes:

- People who get specific benefits or are part of the NHS Low Income Scheme.
- People who are older and don’t have to pay.
- People with certain medical conditions.

You can find more information about help with prescription costs on the NHS website.

Prescriptions for Patients Travelling Abroad

If you are travelling abroad and take regular medicine for a long-term health issue, your doctor can give you up to a three-month supply.

If you're planning to be away for more than three months, you might need to find a local doctor to get your medicine while you're there. Sometimes, you can also find certain treatments at a pharmacy abroad.

Doctors in the UK won't provide medication for new issues that come up while you're travelling. This includes diarrhoea medicine, travel sickness pills, or medicine for anxious flyers.

If you leave the UK and plan to be away for at least three months, the NHS rules say you'll be removed from the practice patient list. You won't be able to get NHS treatment during your time away. So, make sure to get enough of your regular medicine before you go. Also, plan how you will get your medicine after you arrive at your new destination.
